Goa has been a main attraction for a few decades now, experiencing a tremendous growth in tourism in the 1960s, when counterculture explorers came looking for enlightenment and beaches.  This was the beginning of a very strong party scene in Goa.  Though it is not everywhere, the parties can be easily found, and techno music can be heard until dawn at some of the more lively clubs.  Goa trance takes its name from a kind of pre-techno electronic music that combines modern musical technologies, altered states of consciousness, and local influences from classical Indian music.  The scene is strong enough that it is the subject of Venkat Prabhu’s next release, titled Goa, appropriately enough.
Prabhu, who directed the very successful features Chennai 600028, and Saroja, is one of the hottest Tamil directors working today.  This new effort will be a side-splitting comedy, by all accounts, and will take on the reputation of Goa in popular culture and give it some new twists.  In the style of sexy teen comedies, this is a story of young men on holiday in Goa, who get into a particularly perilous situation.  The film will star Jai and Vaibhav Reddy, among other top names, and will also star Sneha, in a role that was once being considered by Jessica Alba.  In the tradition of feature films being made in other locations, Goa is filmed in Malaysia.

The Dastkar Society in India, is similar to the Podmajersky Inc., in Chicago, USA. Both of these organizations seek to give artists a chance. Not just to show their work, but by providing living quarters and workspace as well. At discounted rates. In the Chicago neighborhood of Pilsen, any artist, be it a writer, painter, sculptor, or musician, has a shot at a loft apartment, in one of the many buildings that the Podmajersky family has owned for last one hundred years. In fact, they only rent to artists, and this has created quite a community in Pilsen, an area previously a bit rough and just bordering the notorious ‘South Side’ of Chicago.

Dastkar in India has one main goal, and that is the improvement in the financial success of their artists. Support is given to the craftspeople in the form of help with marketing and access to those facilities, as well as providing financial assistance and grant money to those who need it. The Society wishes to bridge the gap between the artist and the consumer, and they remain active in traveling to the smaller towns, and finding the artists and bringing their works into the city. They recognize and value what the artist has to provide for society, not just in the work or the goods that they produce, but in the culture they create and sustain. For each city knows when the artists move in, the neighborhood becomes more desirable. Business will boom, a cafe, a restaurant, a city park, a hotel, Delhi India will become an artistic hub, and all those surrounding that hub will thrive.

Dastkar was formed in 1981. What started out as six women volunteering their time to furthering the economic security of their artists, has turned into a a full time marketing and development organization, that attends to not only Delhi, but to all of India. And what started out as a small group of women mainly helping other women gain independence and stability, has become an across the board organization to help all artists of the country. Dastkar is now seen as a movement, helping to further the artistic traditions of an entire country.

Business travel from India to Thailand got a boost last week when Cathay Pacific airlines began non-stop flights to New Delhi from Bangkok. This will be a boon for Indian business travelers as well as for hotels in Bangkok Thailand and other Thai businesses that cater to tourists.

The airline, based in Hong Kong, began flights on the new route on March 28, 2009. They are offering numerous promotional discounts to encourage travelers to take advantage of the new route. Currently three other airlines offer similiar flights, but they have a smaller load factor than the 85 percent that Cathay Pacific is showing on forward bookings.

New Delhi is the prime air hub in India and is one of the country’s most frequented destinations. Thailand has become a premiere destination for Indian business as well as for leisure travels. Thailand is also growing as a wedding destination for Indian brides and the airline hopes to capitalize on that market as well.

Thailand’s most famous island, Phuket, has been named the “Best Island in Asia” by TripAdvisor.com. TripAdvisor is the world’s largest travel online community. They recently released their list of the “10 Best Island Escapes” and Phuket finished at number 8 – the only Asian destination on the list.

Phuket already holds the distinction of the most popular island, with more visitors flocking to its incredible beaches and tropical forests than anywhere else in Asia. Located about 860 kilometers south of Bangkok, Phuket is actually a collection of forty individual islands and is connected to the mainland by a bridge.

The beaches are the main draw for this amazing region that was once the home of rubber and tin plantations and an important trade port for China with India.  The island has beautiful white sands, limestone cliffs, and tranquil waters on the Andaman Sea.  The waters around Phuket are popular with divers from all over the world and other water recreation such as parasailing and boating are common.  There are many luxury hotels on Phuket, as the rich and famous are drawn to this island paradise which is also home to some of the hottest nightclubs in Asia.

The island is home to a number of nature and animal preserves. Sirinat National Park and Khao Phra Thaeo National Park protect the natural beauty and wonder of the island while giving visitors the opportunity to see those wonders up close.  The protected areas also include several marine parks which extend out into the ocean to preserve the marine life such as coral, jellyfish, and other species.

More and more people are finding a reason to visit Goa, India every year. It is easily one of the most popular holiday destinations in all of India. Even though it’s the smallest state in that massive country, Goa manages to pack a lot into its limited geography. There are rivers, mountains, forests, jungles, and, of course, the beaches for which the region is world-famous.

One of the first startling aspects of Goa is that is is officially classified as one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots. It has an amazingly rich and diverse collection of natural flora and fauna.  Goans are proud of their wilderness and have worked to preserve large stretches of forest. Over 1500 plant species, 275 types of birds, and nearly 50 animal species are protected in wildlife sanctuaries throughout Goa.  The parks and preserves are home to a large number of snakes and the coastline is teeming with an abundance of marine life.

Goa has also preserved many of its cultural and historic sites.  Religious sites such as the Bom Jesus Basilica and the Church of the Immaculate Conception harken back to Goa’s centuries as a Portuguese colony. The Mangueshi Temple, meanwhile, is a tribute to the native heritage of the area. Goa has a number of museums and forts to explore. There are also beautiful examples of both Indian architecture and the blended Portuguese-Indian style from the colonial era.

Much of the Portuguese influence can be seen in the cities and a few of the villages of Goa.  While the village offer a more traditional Goan experience, the cities are increasingly developed to resemble the modern urban environment one can find throughout the world.  The various shops, restaurants, and four star hotels Goa all reflect a blending of western urban design but with distinctive Indian influences and character.

Of course, the main reason most tourists give for visiting Goa is the beach.  Whether simply relaxing in the sun and listening to the ocean waves or engaging in recreational activities such as parasailing or scuba diving, visitors will find plenty to help them de-stress from their daily grind.  The beaches here are about more than just the sparkling ocean with restaurants and shops lining many beaches.

One of Goa’s more famous attractions is its vibrant nightlife.  Dance clubs dot the beaches and the cities, drawing in thousands of partiers during the height of the season.  Some clubs even throw raves on the beaches, giving party-goers the unique experience of dancing on the sands under the moonlight.
