Jimi at Monterey: 4 Decades Later

It’s stunning to think that it has been that long since the events of that night changed the way we listen to music. Four decades is so far past old, and everyone swore that this would never happen to us, but we sometimes walk that strange river of time, and end up just like we are right now. It’s kind of a wonderful thing that we get to be alive and remember those who are not, and there are few who could ever be remembered as well as Jimi Hendrix .

His gifts were legendary. In an early gig, working with Little Richard, he vowed that he would do with guitar what the extremely hyper pop star was doing with his voice. It happened, of course, and when it did, the world stood up and recognized. There’s very little since that could compare with the magnificent moment of burning at the Monterey Pop Festival . It was charged with an enormous genius, and one as rare as any sand in the hourglass of time, which is to say, as precious as anything. Jimi knew what he was doing, and even though so much of it reads like a lot of stumbling, there was an intelligence guiding this genius body around.

Perhaps that’s what the hardest thing to describe. That the fans understood at the time that this was really happening, and that this would be something they would tell their kids one day. Of course, in those times, most of us didn’t necessarily plan on ever having kids. But amazing things like that sometimes come along anyway. And we find ourselves visiting a past that we can really touch when we look at the accommodations here in this city where there was so much magnetic energy then. Now it’s very much the same beautiful place, and instead of those sounds we can enjoy the sounds of the sea, just as complicated as he was.
