Kerala, what a stunning State. It’s over-run with coconut trees, very tropical and lush. We hired a boat, it’s called a punting boat, and the owner was this Israeli who took us through all the backwaters. We passed by homes where women were doing dishes and laundry in the canal. Children were playing and running happily beside our boat as we continued down the canal. Everyone we passed waved and called out to us. We were dropped off at this amazing spot that had two little thatched cottages with verandas over-looking the backwater and the other view was of rice paddies. This was the only way to get to this spot, by boat and the owner, the Israeli cooked for us too! We took a very long walk around the nearby villages and got a real good taste of what life is in this area, we were so welcomed.
Then we stayed with a friend of my husbands parents and sister in Kerala and they were so astounding with their hospitality. They cooked us delicious meals. We were to leave early one morning, but when we got up, we found out that a local politician was assassinated in his home not too far from where we were. His political party enforced a strike, which meant all shops, schools and businesses had to close down, not even trucks, taxis or auto rickshaws could operate. The roads were completely deserted and the whole village felt eerie. We finally located a private car and a driver, so we did manage to leave in the afternoon. We felt like we were in a movie being evacuated out of a danger zone.
We’re currently in Goa, staying at a Goa India hotel located on Palolem, which is a spectacular bay. We’re on our balcony drinking Kingfishers, which we enjoy tremendously, but this beer isn’t available in most restaurants in India. We are so much having the time of our lives on this holiday. We hired scooters yesterday and headed to some fantastic beaches further north of our hotel. We found one beach that was deserted, we didn’t think that could be possible, but no one was around. We head out to Delhi tomorrow by train, then on up to the foothills of the Himalayas and on to Rajasthan. We’re looking forward to seeing the rest of India, what an amazing place! What an amazing country.
