For a combination of beautiful countryside and splendid luxury hotels, Valencia is hard to beat. Offering fantastic beaches and old-world Spanish charm, Valencia will make any traveler feel perhaps even better than home. Deeply nestled in some of the most exotic and refreshing landscapes in Spain, the place is a splendid mix of old world charm and vibrant and changing culture. There are strong pockets of intellectuals and artists here, who will gladly converse, argue, and agree on any number of things Catalan. There is a very strong tradition for conversation here, and a strong tradition for the written word.
One of the place’s most visible writers is Isabel-Clara Simó. Born in the Alcoi region, she has a background in philosophy and journalism, with a strong knowledge of French language and culture. She received her doctorate from the University of Valencia. At the university, she first came into contact with nationalist groups of artists and critics through Joan Fuster, which lead to the current focus of her creative work. She served as editor the weekly, El Canigo, a magazine founded by her husband, and from which most of the locals know her work. She is also a member of the Catalan Writer’s Association, and one of the pre-eminent authors in the Catalan language.
Isabel-Clara Simó is also the author of many novels, including “El gust amarg de la cervesa,” “La nati,” La veina,” “La salvatge,” and “La innocent.” Her work is deeply connected to the issues of place, and of the shifting role of women in contemporary Catalan society. Her work has been translated into German, English, Castilian Spanish, Italian, and Swiss. She worked on the film “Nostotras,” and has been very active in local television, and continues to write weekly columns.
